UM6P University Habilitation

The University Habilitation, also known as Habilitation to Direct Research (HU), acknowledges the exceptional academic achievements of a teacher-researcher and the innovative nature of their research methodology in various scientific fields such as exact sciences, humanities, social sciences, and economics. This diploma serves as a testament to the individual's research strategy proficiency and their capacity to guide young researchers and oversee doctoral theses.

To apply for the UM6P University Habilitation, the applicant must be a member of the permanent faculty of UM6P's Enseignants-Chercheurs at the rank of Assistant Professor. Eligibility for registration at the HU is based on the excellence of the candidate's scientific record, his or her ability to supervise young researchers: previous or current co-supervision of thesis, Master's degree, Post doctoral, his teaching experience, particularly at the Master's level, his or her ability to perpetuate his or her research through projects and collaborations, and his or her national and international visibility.

  • The quality of the applicant's scientific publications*;
  • Publications in refereed scientific journals, with supervised or co-supervised students or young researchers, or any other documents that can justify the quality of its supervision ;
  • Teaching experience in a master's degree and/or equivalent;
  • he applicant's national and international visibility (which may be assessed in particular by experience in leading international projects or networks, titles, distinctions,responsibilities (international scholarly associations, expertise, juries, etc.), invitations and participation in international colloquia and international summer schools, etc.) ;
  • Collective activities: efforts mobilized for the scientific community (evaluation of research projects, scientific publications, participation in master(s) and/or PhD(s) juries or any other administrative activities at UM6P.

The application must include the following documents:

  • The application form to be downloaded and completed by the candidate;
  • A letter of motivation to be sent to the CEDoc research committee;
  • Detailed Curriculum Vitae, including a Research and Teaching statement, as well as potential grants obtained as PI or Co-PI;
  • The Detailed Report of the Candidate's Research Activity and Teaching Activity since the Ph.D. and Perspectives;

Any other activity or document deemed relevant by the candidate that could support his/her application and that could include the elements listed in the criteria considered above,letter of support from a scientific personality of reference in the candidate's research field, etc. In the application file, the candidate proposes to the CEDoc Research Commission (CRC) a list of members for the jury. The jury proposed to the CRC must be composed of at least 5 members (at least 2 permanent staff members authorized to work at UM6P or of equivalent rank, and 2 professors authorized to work at UM6P or of equivalent rank). The final validation of the jury will be done by the CRC in consultation with the candidate.

Note: the candidate must not be an author or co-author on a scientific article or research project with one of the members of the jury during the last five years.

The defense takes place in 2 phases:

  • A public presentation by the candidate to the UM6P HU addressing what he or she has accomplished in terms of present and future research work and projects;
  • A discussion with the members of the jury, who draw up an audition report for the CEDoc. The latter notifies the decision of the jury, once validated by the President of the University, to the candidate by a written letter. If the candidate obtains a favorable opinion, the University Habilitation is then awarded to him and he is declared entitled to direct research.

The main missions of the CEDoc research committee are:

  • Pre-selection of candidates for the habilitation to direct research;
  • The choice of referees to appraise the candidacy for the habilitation to direct research;
  • Validation of juries and authorization to defend the habilitation to direct research;

Meetings :

The CEDoc - CRC Research Committee meets twice a year. The fall session in September-November and the spring session in March-May.It will also meet whenever necessary, upon convocation by its President.
